HALLOWEEN POSTER ANALYSIS
Posters are used to advertise and promote films. Posters are the cheapest way to create awareness of a particular film. Posters have many benefits such as you can use them for a considerable amount of time as much as six months. Also posters can be seen outside a cinema, you do not need to be a film fanatic to view a poster, you can be walking home and notice it on a bus.
I have chosen to analyze Halloween H20 poster. This poster has given me inspirations and different concepts that I should include in my original poster.
There are several features included in the Halloween H20 poster. The picture that caught my eye was the image of the different characters which are included in the film. This particular image takes up roughly a third of the entire poster. Due to the size of this image, it suggests that this image is significant in terms of the plot of the film. The different characters on show expresses to viewers that the cast will almost certainly become victims.
The title Halloween H20 has countless connotations. These connotations include costumes, dressing up, pumpkins various monsters. The word ‘Halloween’ normally suggests fear/terror, typically associated with horror films. This particular title may illustrates that there is a strong chance that the film will include ‘evil’ connotations such as weapons and murders, but also is not to blatantly obvious. The title ‘Halloween H20’ is in orange connoting ‘fire’ and ‘heat’ which is associated with violence. This shows the importance of how the titles are portrayed towards audiences and encourages me to use a title which has some relevance towards the film, e.g. showing drips of blood coming down from a title.
The poster also has another significant image which shows as masked villain in the pitch black background, which portrays a sense of darkness and distress as audiences do not know who the masked villain is and why his face is not on show. The position of this particular image is of important significance as it show the Villain behind the main character (as she is in the front of the queue in the poster) suggesting to viewers that he is closely watching her and also tells viewers that this may be the theme of the film, where the villain is constantly chasing the victim. This poster demonstrates to me how important the positioning of each image is on the poster.
On the top left hand corner of the poster there is a tagline which is linked to the genre of the poster which evidently is horror. The tagline is ‘This summer terror wont be taking a vacation’’ this indicates to audiences that the film Halloween H20 will include more terror and despair which is ultimately caused by death. There is no positive outcome from this tagline. The tagline used in the poster gives me an idea that I should include a tagline which is shows fear and terror such as ‘death is inevitable’.
The certificate of this film is 18 which clearly illustrates that the target audience will be of similar age. I must take into consideration the certificate of my film, as to who will be my target audience. Halloween is a type of film which will already have an established audience due to the awareness of this film.
In conclusion there are many aspects of this poster that I will take into account when creating my own poster. These significant aspects include the use of images, a curious tagline, and the use of colour, the importance of the title and finally the certificate and the names of cast/distributor.
